L

L

The L was one of the oldest trains in New York City. It began as a steam railroad in 1865 and then became part of the elevated lines. It was owned by the Brooklyn and Rockaway Beach Railroad and ran from the Long Island Railroad in East New York to a pier in Canarsie Landing. The 14th Street Eastern District Line created the L’s current route in Manhattan. The project was meant to begin in 1916 but wouldn’t be complete until June 30, 1924. The line ran beneath 14th Street to Montrose and Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn. Extensions to the line continued throughout the 20th century, leaving it running between 14th Street - 8th Avenue and Canarsie.
