J
The Jamaica Line (also known as the Broadway Line) opened in 1893 as an elevated line. It was first named 15, then renamed the J in November 1967 when letter designations were being used. The Chrystie Street Connection, opening in 1967, changed the express J’s route to run between Jamaica, Queens, and Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. It was moved to the Queens Boulevard Line on September 11, 1977. After 9/11 caused damage to the R line and the tunnels it ran through, the J line was extended beyond Broad Street to replace the lost R service until October 28, 2001 when it was restored.
Z
The Z line opened on December 11, 1988. It serves during rush hour service along the same path as the J to ease congestion.
